Tips to Make You Dental Implants Last Longer

Most dental procedures impose lifestyle or dietary changes on the patient. For instance, a patient with dental crown must forgo his love for the sticky caramel candies. Dental implants Sydney are one such oral treatment that must be maintained with proper care. To make dental implants last longer and avoid any related complications, here are some simple tips.

Practice good oral hygiene
Dental implants like the natural teeth are prone to plaque build-up and cleaning them regularly is essential. Also, the implants are placed within the gums in such a way that the chances for infection are higher. When the implants are not cleaned well with the right toothpaste and toothbrush infection sets in and the tissue around the implant withdraws leading to implant loss.

Opt for the right toothbrush
When a patient has teeth implants Sydney, a toothbrush with soft bristles is mandatory. This prevents damage to the implants and also protects the seal around the implants. The patient is free to choose manual, electric or sonic brushes but with soft bristles. While many toothbrush brands offer plenty of softer options, it may be a good choice to take the dentist’s advice too.

Say “no” to harsh toothpastes too
Just like the toothbrush, the toothpaste must also act upon the dental implants in a gentle manner. Some tooth pastes contain grainy ingredients like the baking soda which is believed to be very effective for the natural teeth. However, these substances can be extremely harmful to dental implants. In the long run, abrasive toothpastes can scratch the surface of the dental implants and wear them down completely.

Avoid fluoride
From toothpaste to mouthwash, most oral hygiene products contain very high concentration of fluoride. Fluoride in excessive amounts can remove the protective oxide layer from the surface of the implants thus exposing them to corrosion and damage.

Floss each day and every day
While patients without dental implants can get away with flossing only 3-4 times in a week, patients with dental implants must use non-waxed floss every day. This helps to remove the particles below the gum line. The flossing must be followed with a through rinse using any mild mouthwash. Patients can also use water floss or an oral irrigator after consultation with the dentist.

Regular dental check-ups
Tooth implants Sydney is a great replacement option for patients who have lost a tooth or two. Nevertheless, they require proper care and cleaning to last longer (maybe for the entire lifetime of the patient). Learning the trick of maintaining the dental implants starts with a dentist or a hygienist. In case of traces of trouble do not hesitate to consult the dentist as early as possible.

I did not realize that ingredients like baking soda could be harmful for dental implants. My mom has been a big believer in baking soda for dental care for years, but recently got some implants. It might be time to get her away from the baking soda and get some nicer toothbrushes that deal in a gentle manner.
