Dental Tourism Overseas in Thailand or abroad.

Although always critized in Australia by the local industry, dental treatment overseas is also an alternative to part of the population that cannot afford the high dental costs in Australia.
As with any industry , different countries have good and bad professionals. In a globalized world , education , courses is technology is accessible in most countries and treatment overseas can sometimes be a good alternative to some patients.
A very good research is certainly a must and there is no way to deny that risks could be higher overseas due a logistic point of view, specially in more invasive procedures like surgery.
Everything needs to be analized and a domestic research for lower fees within Australia is always recommended.

Recently Australia has seen a rise in the number of people travelling overseas to undertake dental procedures hoping they will “save” money. A quick search on Google will give results of flashy websites revealing locations such as Thailand or Philippines claiming “safe, clean and cheap dental implants” – at promises of over 60% savings in a ‘world-class’ international hospital. Some packages also offer accommodation, activities and sightseeing to those receiving dental treatments. A package offering dental implants for a fraction of cost you’ll receive in Australia along with a holiday seems too good to be true, right? Well, if it seems too good to be true, then may be it really is.

There is no doubt that some of the treatment offered can be of high quality. But, the more complicated the treatment becomes – the higher the likelihood of something going wrong gets. Unfortunately, many Australians after getting ‘cheap dental implants‘ from places like Thailand have returned with problems that are difficult to address. Most of these damages ended up costing them extensive and costly repair procedures.

Before undertaking overseas dental implants, Australians should read the following facts:

1. Many overseas dental practitioners that offer such cheap treatments to patients are practitioners that are not under the control of Australian Dental rules and regulations. Dentists in Australia abide by the highest standards of practice, safety and excellence in care.

2. When it comes to dentistry, the Infection control standards in Australia are one of the best practices in the world. Infection control requirements in overseas countries are less rigid. It is crucial for the procedure of dental implants to require stringent infection control as it often includes surgery.

3. There have been recent cases in Australia reporting new superbug ‘NDM-1’ which is highly resistant to antibiotics. The increasing number of patients jetting overseas for cheap dental procedures has been blamed for this invulnerable bacteria arriving here in Australia. ‘NDM-1′ appears to originate from India, where some cases of infection have also been reported in Japan and Pakistan.

4. Due to language and culture differences, patients undertaking treatment in a foreign country may find it difficult to have their needs understood. If some complications arise, these communication differences can cause more difficulty in the process of rectification.

5. Dental implants need to be conducted in a good amount of time, so as to allow each stage of treatment to settle before moving on to the next. Dental implants cannot be done professionally over a holiday period of 7 days. Implants need a time gap between the different stages of treatment, otherwise the patient may find that the work is placed in areas that have not been settled properly and may therefore fail. Fitting dental implants within a holiday schedule without allowing time will only increase the chances of complications and failure.

4. Patients treated within Australia can seek alternatives if they face any problems with their dental treatment. Most importantly, they will have an easy access to their dentist to resolve issues, and their rights are protected. The complications to health caused from dental implants obtained overseas are not always covered by travel insurance and the repair may not be covered by Australian health funds.

The risks are not any different for dental implants conducted overseas like in Thailand and patients need to be aware. It is strongly recommended to choose your dentist carefully to avoid the risk of consequences of overseas dental treatment.

The smartest thing one would ever do about getting major dental treatment is doing it abroad. Oh yes. This is such a good post, I would love to consider Thailand as an option. I would definitely say yes to dental tourism overseas, but you should find the right dental practice. A little research needs to be done. I live in Chicago and I went to Macedonia to get dental implants. I must say - it was top quality service by all means. Dr Diana and Mediana www.medianadental.com and choosing them for my treatment was the best decision I ever made. Thank you so muuch

Saving money on dental in Thailand also depends on the treatment, the bigger the treatment the more the savings. Most dental in Thailand can be done in about 10 to 14 days even immediate implants. Conventional implants will usually need to trips within around 6 months.

As dental costs continue to rise, some people are choosing to travel overseas for treatment instead.

With reported savings of up to 75% in some countries, it’s not surprising a growing number of people are packing their bags to chase cheap dentistry overseas.

In this report we look at:

What the overseas options are
What the downsides and dangers are
The growing dental crisis in Australia
Some case studies from home and away
What to look out for

There are few things in life worse than a trip to the dentist. Some might say the only thing worse is paying the bill. Worse yet, though, is not being able to afford to go at all. Because of this a growing number of Australians are considering seeking cheaper dental treatment overseas.

And if you’re up for it, there are plenty of medical tourism agencies to help you on your way. Many offer a range of medical options – from cosmetic surgery to elective surgery, eye surgery and fertility treatment while others specialise in one area such as dental.

These agencies will organise your flights, accommodation and even sightseeing (though not travel insurance should a procedure go wrong). They will provide advice on hospitals regarding their success rates and complications for treatment and whether they are accredited by organisations such as the International Organization for Standardizations or the Joint Commission International.

It all sounds pretty tempting, but is dental tourism too good to be true?
Overseas destinations

India, Vietnam and Turkey are just some of the exotic global destinations on offer for medical tourism. For Australians, the most popular destinations for dental work are Malaysia and Thailand.

Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok sees 11,000 overseas visitors for dental treatment alone.

Marketing Director Kenneth Mays estimates that 500 to 600 of these patients are Australian. “We provide a complete dental centre, staffed by 55 full- and part-time dental specialists, 26 [of whom] trained and/or have been board-certified in the US, UK, Japan or Australia,” he says.

Patients are choosing to travel to Thailand, he explains, because of the lower cost for equivalent quality of care, combined with good treatment, service and value – and all in a desirable vacation location.

Barbara Sherriff, who owns Queensland travel agency My Body and Spirit, specialises in sending clients to Thailand for dental work, cosmetic surgery and laser eye surgery.

She says the business came about as a result of her husband’s dental woes. “He needed signifigant dental treatment and was quoted $25,000, which was just far too much.”

Sheriff, a travel agent already familiar with Thailand, looked into having the treatment there instead. She and her husband visited The Bangkok Hospital on the holiday island of Phuket and were impressed with the facilities.

After receiving a quote they were even more impressed with the price – $5500, a huge saving on the original quote. As a result, the couple started a health travel service to Thailand.

Sheriff says they’ve sent more than 160 clients overseas in the last year, 75% of whom were for dental. When she asks her clients why they’re choosing overseas destinations for their dental care, the answer is always the same.

“It’s cost. We’ve seen people who’ve been quoted up to $60,000 for substantial work and simply cannot afford to have it done in Australia. We now receive up to 20 enquiries a week, and most of these are from people wanting dental work.”

Cassandra Italia owns Global Health Travel, another agency that sends Australians to a variety of countries for healthcare. She also says dental requests are on the rise. “Dental is huge, and the driving factor is cost,” she says. “Even if people have a holiday at the same time they will usually find they still come out better off financially.”

Why would anyone risk going overseas for dental implants these days since you have clinics like the Dental Implants Professionals who offer dental implants for $1500 in Sydney and Melbourne ?

Let's remember that the $1500 is the implant only, then there's the crown for another $1350, so it's actually $2850 yes.

The cost is just one factor - experience of dentist also matters, especially in Dental Implants. Check out www.dentaltrip2india.com for cost comparison but still look for doctors education and expertise.
