Specialists Roles and dentist costs in Australia

Beware of websites or clinics trying to always push you to see their own specialist prior to a visit to the general dentist. It would most likely to incur on unnecessary higher dentist costs in Australia.

Although you don't need a referral letter to see dental implant specialists in Sydney, most independent specialists will be pleased to have one explaining why the general dentist was not able to help during your first visit.

The letter of referral states the specific treatment needed to be perform by the specialist and also the nature of the overall treatment.

Dental Costs associated with a specialist treatment are most likely to be more expensive for obvious reasons and should therefore be left as a second alternative for complex cases.

Beware that some dentists restrict their practise to one specific field like oral surgery, implant ology, periodontics and others. These general dentists although not recognised by the Dental Board of Australia as specialists can become extremely experience in their field of practise and are also a good alternative for patients. These professionals as other dentists are required by law to update their skill and education in courses up to 60 hours per cycle.

General Dentists are able and also trained to recognize their limitations and will be more than happy to refer cases to specialists in case it is necessary. It is obviously not in their interest to take on cases that could become problematic or beyond their ability.

Astounded by the cost of dental services. Past 12m found it necessary to have front implant (with 2 teeth) and just completed a route canal and a full crown. Appreciate it was special work, but $12K is more than it cost to have my hip replaced. Maybe people have noticed there are no old dentists, they are all on the golf course. Fortunately for the X, Y etc generations, will see dentists disappearing as with my family experience they have almost no teeth problems, no fillings or need for the over priced services.

It is very expensive to run a dental practice in Australia with the wages of 2 full-time staff at $2,300 a week, rent at $900 a week, loan costs to set up or purchase the practice, insurances around $2,000 a month, university loans to pay back, costs of materials which are nearly all imported from USA or Europe, dentists don't start earning until around 24 years old and then by 60 their back is totally shagged and they can't work. It still costs all those running costs when you take holidays and time off ( a months holiday can end up costing $30,000 just in overhead costs), no guaranteed superannuation, no sick pay, no leave loading. Not many dentists are physically fit enough to play golf or tennis. So if you think dentists have it great and dentistry in Australia is too expensive, then buy a practice and reap the rewards!!!

$2300 per week! I have read you earn much more... What? Why? If they are earning that by 24 then all loans would be paid off pretty quickly. Average Australian full-time wage is just over $1000 p/wk, with most of the population on much less, who have little or no superannuation, no holiday pay, still have rent or loans and bills to pay... can't afford a holiday. So have a think about how much most of the population actually has left to have dental work done.....
